These days, our smartphones need applications, much as our bodies require oxygen to breathe. But during this week’s Mobile World Congress 2024 (MWC 2024), we were given a preview of the potential reality of app-free smartphones in the future.

Using the technology, one startup unveiled a hypothetical smartphone that runs entirely on artificial intelligence. That’s correct, Deutsche Telekom demonstrated last week in front of the public in Barcelona how a phone without applications may function using artificial intelligence. To make calls, send messages, and even place food orders, we all require applications on our phones.

However, the business believes that these tools may be immediately replaced on the smartphone due to AI breakthroughs, and this notion is a portent of things to come in the near future. The business, in collaboration with Qualcomm and a startup named Brain, created the T-Phone concept gadget, which has an app-free user experience.

In fact, according to the company’s CEO, over the next five to ten years, no one will be utilizing applications on their phones. So how will AI on a smartphone replace these apps? The business notes that instead of providing users with random information, AI will be able to do all these jobs and provide results that are customized for them.

The telecom provider also noted how Large Language Models (LLMs) are developing and growing, which will guarantee that these phones can survive without applications and continue to serve the demands of the end user. With the Gemini Nano feature, which is featured on the Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 models, artificial intelligence is already finding its way into phones.

In the next years, you can anticipate seeing AI integration on more devices, including iPhones. Thus, it is not wholly unexpected to learn that a startup has shown us that applications may not be the only energy source required for these gadgets in the future.
