Following his release by Juventus, Angel Di Maria has joined Benfica once again.

The Argentine returned to the Portuguese team he first joined in 2007 after moving to Europe from Rosario.

According to recent reports, Di Maria has agreed to a one-year deal with Benfica that would keep him at the Portuguese club till 2024.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-60959″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-argentine-world-cup-victor-angel-di-maria-makes-a-free-transfer-to-benfica-download-2023-07-06t171725.140.jpg” alt=”” width=”1280″ height=”959″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-argentine-world-cup-victor-angel-di-maria-makes-a-free-transfer-to-benfica-download-2023-07-06t171725.140.jpg 259w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-argentine-world-cup-victor-angel-di-maria-makes-a-free-transfer-to-benfica-download-2023-07-06t171725.140-150×112.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px” />

The reigning champions of the Primeira Liga will be depending on Di Maria to provide some seasoned knowledge to the side and aid them in defending their championship in the next campaign. He will also be reunited with players from last year’s World Cup-winning Argentina squad, including Nicolas Otamendi.

The 35-year-old’s arrival was announced by the team on Twitter with the message “Welcome Home, Di Maria!”

The Argentine’s tenure with the team from 2007 to 2010 served as a stepping stone to his major transfer to Real Madrid, where he went on to win a league championship, two domestic cups, and the Champions League.

After spending seven years at PSG, Di Maria signed a one-year contract with Juventus last year. And once he made the decision to depart after a dismal season, rumors about his final destination abounded.

Inter Miami allegedly contacted the Argentine winger in the summer and suggested pairing him up with former colleague Lionel Messi. That would have required the 35-year-old to completely give up playing in Europe, however.

Di Maria seems to have declined the chance to rejoin the team that handed him his European debut in the end.

The winger still has a high level of talent and ability despite his advanced age, which might help the Portuguese champions defend their crown and aspire for better things in the Champions League.

Despite having multiple ailments last season, the Argentine scored 8 goals and provided 7 assists for Juventus in all competitions. Di Maria was also essential to Argentina’s win in the World Cup final, as he went on to score one and assist on another.
